I never love singing. Yet, I was been influence by my best friend about it. My best friend loves singing. She brings me to different occasions which represent different activities related to singing. I always look forward to Saturday in Hobart. Saturday is market day, when hundreds of art and craft stalls, fresh fruit and vegetables and other interesting stalls appear in Salamanca Place for the day. Today on my visit there I noticed a new photography stall. I am great friends with a lot of stallholders there but I hadn’t met this stallholder before so I went and introduced myself. His speciality is Tasmanian photography, and unlike a lot of the other photography stalls which sell all the common sights his stall was full of very original and colourful images taken in places which I didn’t even know were in Tasmania! We chatted for just a short time as there were quite a lot of other people looking at his stall and I didn’t want him to lose sales on my account. I continued my walk around the market and on my way home I passed his stall again. It was still packed full of people so it looks like I’m not the only one who was impressed!

Children’s photography is a fine art indeed! Not only do you have to capture the moment, you also have to be able to let the children express themselves naturally. Often when children are in front of the stranger they seize up, or pull faces that are not really expressive of what they really feel.

When I used to work for youth community services in Northampton it was part of my job to take photos of community events. I was talking to a children’s photographer in Northampton about how my photos always came out looking artificial and unnatural, in terms of the expressions on the children’s faces.

He informed me that the best way to photograph children is to actually get them to forget about the fact that they are being photographed. He told me that the best thing to do is to get them to play some kind of game either with each other, all with somebody they know. Too much of a formal setting can actually upset the whole process.

Sometimes it’s best to set up several cameras on tripods to capture different angles when the children aren’t looking directly at the lens. You will be surprised at what shots you get with just leaving the camera on a timer. I photographer friend told me that he normally sets his time as to once every 10 seconds and let nature take its course!

I already had quite a few lenses in my collection but lacked a wide-angle one so in the end I opted for the 10-22 Canon. Most of my lenses are Canon and they have been giving me the best results, which is why I decided to spent a bit more and get this particular model. After buying this lens, I ended up using it a lot more than I expected and to be honest it has really breathed new life into the hobby for me. I even find myself taking photos with this lens in situations where it is not really needed just to see what kind of interesting effects I can get. I am taking care not to overuse it however, which is something I commonly see amongst people that buy expensive new lenses. The most important thing though is to have fun and I can honestly say that using this lens is a joy.
